Malagò

The Confederation has celebrated, in October, its tenth anniversary in the classroom Church of the University LUISS “Guido Carli” in Rome. An appointment sponsored by the Movement for Ethics , Culture and Sport and by ASD LUISS University in collaboration with the Italian Fencing Federation, as can be seen . An appointment which shows that the sport sets himself issues that go beyond the purely competition, as can be seen from the theme of the seminar organized on the occasion.“The Mediterranean Fencing Confederation, sports example of ethics and multiculturalism”.
Opened the proceeding the General Director of the LUISS , Giovanni Lo Storto, who said that “for some time now , the University is open to various worlds that represent the faces of the society. Among these is the sport , meaning this is not just football . Fencing express today , the values of sport ethics through a reality such as that of the Mediterranean Confederation which makes the dialogue between the countries his driving force.”
After him the President of CONI, Giovanni Malagò who brought his greetings to the members of the Executive Committee of the Confederation. “This appointment – said the summit of the Italian Olympic Committee – comes at an historic time when the Mediterranean becomes a sea of tragedy. What happened in these days can not leave indifferent the sports, sports can do more than what the institutions can not . The testimony comes just from the Mediterranean Fencing Confederation, which unites countries of three continents , and allows dialogue and discussion. It ‘ a fact which will be encouraged and an example for the sport, to follow.”
Also present the President of ASI, the Italian Association of Sports and Social Claudio Barbaro which remarked the social value of sport in addition to racing. “The confrontation – he said – is the basis of sports. When this is permeated with true values, then takes on a social value.”
The focus was then directed purely on the Mediterranean Confederation, 10 years after its birth . “We were 10 and now we are 20 countries – said Lioniero del Maschio – There are two main merits of the Confederation in the past ten years. The first is that it has helped to convey respect, friendship and sharing between reality fencing of three continents (Europe , Asia, and Africa), which, before 2003, little was know one another and in some cases were not even present in the landscape of fencing . Today representatives of the different countries normally follow the events of others in a real friendship . The other success of the Confederation – said del Maschio – is that they have contributed to spreading the fencing in some areas. It is undoubtedly a merit of the only Confederation but it is a fact that countries such as Syria, Lebanon and Albania today a reality fencing absolutely unknown and absent until a few years ago.”
Then, two representatives of the Executive Committee took the word: Vice President Ziad El- Choueiri, Lebanese, and Nourredine Robbana, Tunisian.
”Lebanon – said El Choueiri – has joined the Mediterranean Confederation in 2009 and it was followed by a rapid and effective development of fencing. Before the Lebanese fencing was on the edge of the Arabic sports landscape, but today Lebanon has emerged on the scene, not only Arabs, but also Asian and international . In fact, the most recent success came last week with Mona Sshaito fencer who won the Asian -Under23 Championship . In my opinion, this development took place in practice thanks to our presence within this Confederation alongside countries with a glorious past in the sport of fencing.”
The Tunisian Robbana has emphasized the positive momentum of the fencing in Africa, both in terms of sports, with the silver won by an Egyptian fencer at the Olympics in London 2012 , and politically. “We have to do so in a manner – has marked Robbana – that the Mediterranean fencing will be sponsor of the common objective on development of this noble sport . We think we have marked the path for future generations and it is these that will touch take the baton.”
Followed Giorgio Scarso, President of the Italian Fencing Federation and Vice President of the International Federation . Scarso remarked the importance of the Mediterranean Confederation in the context of the fencing world . “It ‘s been a winning bet – said tracing the budget of the first 10 years of the Confederation sort of impulse Italy – I say this looking not only at the given sport , as to that of human relationships. We have dozens of guys from Tunisia , Algeria and Libya and from around the Mediterranean basin, which come in Italy and Italian masters who go to them – said Scarso -The next year Chiavari host the Mediterranean Championships and these young people will be protagonist. It will be an opportunity to review the technical, but will also a time of enrichment not only technical but also cultural.” Scarso, as he had done previously the president of CONI Giovanni Malagò, wanted to retrieve the tragedy of Lampedusa. “When there are disasters there is neither knit nor colour. After what is happening in Lampedusa, I think we should draw the attention of boys. It ‘s not a true pure and simple story, we saw that the guys in the sport can bypass certain barriers . Thanks to the Mediterranean Confederation and its events , many were moments of confrontation between the human youngest generations . In this context, it therefore raises the tenth anniversary of the Mediterranean Confederation, since his foundation during the Cadet and Junior World Championships in Trapani, in 2003. After 10 years – concluded Scarso – us’ seemed appropriate to take stock and to empathize how the Mediterranean Confederation has contributed to the integration in the world of sports, not only in fencing.”
To conclude the work, with thanks, Paul Del Bene, sporting director of ASD LUISS. “With the presence of the President of CONI – he said – and members of the Executive Committee of the Mediterranean Confederation, we have once again brought great examples of Ethics and Culture in our university , which I think is very important considering the difficult moment that is across the whole world and the areas of the Mediterranean basin, battered by war and humanitarian tragedies unprecedented . The sport can and should be a vehicle of important values that must never be used to create division but union , and in this I think we proved that we all believe strongly.”
After Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 and Cesare Prandelli in 2012 , the students of LUISS Guido Carli had now the opportunity to interact with other excellent sports world, bringing their testimonies on the values of ethics sports .
The evening ended with a gala dinner during which the President del Maschio distributed to the present authorities and members of the ComExe a medallion coined to commemorate the tenth anniversary.
